Subject: Notice to Vacate Rented Premises at [Property Address]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I, [Tenant Name], am presently residing as a tenant at [Property Address] under our rent agreement. This letter is to formally inform you of my intention to vacate the said premises on or before —, in accordance with the notice period of 1 month(s) agreed between us.

I will ensure all outstanding dues, including electricity, water, and maintenance charges, are cleared before handing over possession, and that the premises are left in good condition, fair wear and tear excepted.

Kindly arrange for a joint inspection of the premises closer to the vacating date, and process the refund of my security deposit, after any lawful deductions, as per our agreement.

Please treat this letter as formal written notice as required under our agreement, and kindly acknowledge receipt of the same.

Yours sincerely,

[Tenant Name]

How much notice do I need to give?

Whatever your rent agreement says — most Indian residential agreements specify one month, sometimes two. If your agreement is silent on it, one month's written notice ending with a rental month is the widely accepted default (and matches Section 106 of the Transfer of Property Act for month-to-month tenancies).

How should I deliver the notice?

Print and sign it, then hand it over in person and ask the other party to sign a copy as acknowledgement — or send it by registered post or speed post with acknowledgement due, and keep the receipt. An email or WhatsApp copy is useful as a backup, but a signed or postal acknowledgement is the strongest proof the notice was given on time.

What happens to the security deposit?

The deposit is refundable once the premises are handed back, minus lawful deductions — unpaid rent or utility bills, and damage beyond normal wear and tear. Doing a joint inspection with photos on the last day avoids most disputes about what's deductible.
