How does rent splitting by room size work?
With a custom share, each person's share is treated as a relative weight rather than a fixed percentage. For example, giving one person a share of 1.5 and everyone else a share of 1 means that person pays 1.5× as much as each of the others — useful when one room is noticeably bigger, has an attached bathroom, or gets better light. The shares don't need to add up to 100 or any particular number; they're normalized automatically.
Should utilities be split the same way as rent?
Not necessarily — many households split rent by room size but split utilities equally, since everyone usually uses roughly the same amount of electricity and wifi regardless of room size. This calculator currently applies one split method to the combined total, so if you want a different method for utilities, run the calculation twice and add the two per-person figures together.
What counts as a "shared bill" for splitting?
Typically electricity, wifi/broadband, cooking gas, water tanker charges, society maintenance, and a shared cook or cleaner — anything the whole household uses together rather than something one person pays for individually (like a personal subscription).
