What is PPF and how does the interest work?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed, long-term savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. Interest is set quarterly by the government (currently 7.1% per annum), compounded annually and credited at the end of each financial year on the lowest balance between the 5th and last day of each month. This calculator simplifies that to one annual compounding step for an estimate.
Is PPF tax-free?
Yes — PPF enjoys "EEE" (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status: your annual contribution (up to ₹1,50,000) is deductible under Section 80C, the interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is also fully tax-exempt.
Can I invest more than ₹1,50,000 a year?
No — deposits beyond ₹1,50,000 in a financial year don't earn interest and aren't eligible for the Section 80C deduction. The scheme also has a 15-year minimum tenure, extendable afterward in blocks of 5 years, with or without further contributions.
